The Tame Valley Wetlands is home to many community groups of various scopes and sizes, doing wonderful work in their local areas. To enable these groups to do even more, the Tame Valley Wetlands has launched a community grants scheme.
Our grant scheme is managed by the Heart of England Community Foundation (HoECF) with a total of £20,000 available in 2015 and 2016 from the Heritage Lottery Fund via the Tame Valley Wetlands (TVW) Landscape Partnership Scheme. Grants range between £200 – £2,000 and need to be match-funded. For example, groups applying for £200, will need to find another £200. However, this should not be a barrier to applying as HoECF can help you secure that match.
To qualify, your project needs to work towards at least one of the Tame Valley Wetlands’ aims and deliver outputs/outcomes in our scheme area. The aims are as follows:
- Aim 1: Conserve, enhance and restore built and natural heritage features in order to improve the landscape of the Tame Valley Wetlands area.
- Aim 2: Connect the local community with the Tame Valley Wetlands landscape, involve people of all ages and backgrounds the area. Work with people who would not normally be involved and support them to get involved in a wide range of projects, activities and events.
- Aim 3: Improve access and learning for local people – support the local community to visit Tame Valley Wetlands and to understand about more about this area.
- Aim 4: Provide training opportunities for local people in a range of heritage and conservation topics. Support the local community to increase their skills and knowledge levels to provide a lasting legacy.

2015 applications
Over £7,100 have now been awarded to six local groups for the following projects:
- Castle Vale Neighbourhood Partnership: Castle Vale’s Environmental Month, a month of activities to educate residents and inspire them to take action for the environment.
- Dosthill Wildlife Group: purchase of secure tool storage unit, production of an information leaflet and purchase of two oak trees to be planted on site.
- Hodge Lane Conservation Group: construction of a pond dipping platform.
- Tameside Wildlife Conservation Group: production of an information leaflet.
- Town Wall Wildlife Group: new signage and information panels for the site, launch event to celebrate the newly acquired Local Nature Reserve Status
- Wilnecote Widlife Conservation Group: restoration of the fencing and car park surface
